Björn Ready for Round 2 This Weekend / Björn Set for Super GT Drive in Suzuka 1000km / Björn Guestdriver in Swedish Camaro Cup
Björn Wirdheim has been keeping busy lately. After the Formula Nippon season opener at Fuji Speedway he celebrated his 26th birthday, finalized plans for a guest drive in the Swedish Camaro Cup and agreed to participate in his first race in the Japanese GT Championship. Björn's debut race at Fuji two weeks ago was unfortunately cancelled due to bad weather conditions, the end result was therefore the same as qualifying allowing Björn to retain his 4th position overall with 1.5 points. It was decided to only give half points as the race never got underway.
This weekend Björn is heading to Suzuka for Round 2 of the Formula Nippon Championship.
"It was a shame not being able to race at Fuji. The weekend started well and we kept getting quicker throughout the sessions. I was hoping to put up a good fight for a podium position and was feeling especially confident in the wet conditions. But at the end of the day the organizers made the right decision in not allowing the field loose behind the safety car,"
"It would have been interesting to see how well the Honda engine would have performed during a race distance, now we'll have to wait and see at Suzuka."
Björn and his team, DoCoMo Team Dandelion Racing, tested the new car for the first time at Suzuka during the official test in early March.
"We had three test days at Suzuka and got to sample both wet and dry conditions. It's one of the hardest circuits there is to learn and previous experience can make a massive difference. The Japanese drivers and some of the Europeans that have competed there previously will be hard to beat,"
"But it was a successful test and most importantly we seemed to be quick on used tyres. My focus during this coming race weekend will be to make use of the experience gained at Suzuka and Fuji when it comes to making full use of the new tyres. A good qualifying position will be crucial."
Björn has also agreed to participate in at least one race in this year's Japanese Super GT Championship.
"I will be participating in the Suzuka 1000km race with a works team in the GT500 class. Next year I hope to be able to combine a full program in Super GT together with my Formula Nippon duties and I'm really pleased to get the opportunity and the experience that comes with it already this year. My mentor Eje Elgh has played an important role in making this happen and I hope to thank him by delivering a good result."
Swedish fans will get the opportunity to see Björn race in Sweden again for the first time since 1998. He has provisionally accepted an invitation to participate in the season opener of the Camaro Cup Championship at Mantorp Park on the 18th of June.
"I'm really excited about coming back home to Sweden and driving the Guest Car in the Swedish Camaro Cup. It's a concept similar to modern single-seater racing where everybody is using the same chassis, engine and tyres. I've been asked previously to drive Guest Cars in various championships but this is the first time I've decided to accept and I'm looking forward to catching up with all of my Swedish fans. I hope to be available to drive for the season opener at Mantorp, if not, it will most certainly happen at Falkenberg later on in the season."
