(September 2, 2000) SCCA and BFGoodrich Tires takes the Trans-Am Series to Ft. Worth for the Grand Prix of Texas, being ran at Texas World Speedway, just about 20 miles outside of Dallas. This 2.324 mile circuit now consists of a new infield road course just recently completed specifically for this weekend. There is also a temporary chicane set up on the entrance to turn 1 to slow the cars down, as they are running speeds in access of 175 mph on the front straight.

With the Dallas/Ft. Worth area experiencing record highs the past few weeks, physical conditioning and stamina will be a requirement for drivers to finish the race being ran at 2:30 in the afternoon Sunday. Tires will also be a major concern for teams. BFGoodrich has recommended that tire pressures be ran no lower than 28 pounds to avoid accessive tire wear.

Practice on Friday revealed fast times for many teams. Leighton Reese (Minnetonka, MN) and the Banner Racing Team ran fourth quickest on Friday with a time of 1:23.774, an average lap speed of 99.869 mph. Quickest in Friday's practice was Brian Simo with a time of 1:22.884, an average speed of 100.877 mph.

Qualifying took place about 1pm Saturday afternoon. Leighton was running with Brian Simo and Johnny Miller as he came upon Lou Gigliotti. Gigliotti, in the #28 Corvette, was spitting oil out the rear of the car all over the front of the #66 Banner Racing entry. Gigliotti was seriously blocking Reese for many laps while dropping oil. After finally being able to get a good run in the oil and able to pass Lou, the checkered flag dropped on the qualifying session, and Leighton wasn't able to post a clean fast lap. As a result, the Banner Racing entry will start from 9th position on the starting grid. Qualifying on the pole will be Brian Simo, with Paul Gentalozzi and Chris Neville following behind respectively.
