BFGoodrich* Tires At A Glance - Trans-Am Series
May 20, Mosport International Raceway, Ontario, Canada
* Trans-Am Heads to Canada - The Trans-Am Series for the BFGoodrich* Tires Cup makes its only Canadian appearance, May 18-20, at Mosport International Raceway some 60 miles north east of Toronto. Held as part of the Victoria Day holiday celebration, the race will continue the battle among world-class super cars, including the Jaguar XKR, Qvale Mangusta, Panoz Esperante, Ford Mustang and Chevrolet's Corvette and Camaro makes.
* Pit Stop Back In Trans-Am - The Mosport event, which will cover 125 miles instead of the Series' traditional 100 miles, will be the first of three races this season to feature pit stops. Trans-Am has not had a mandated pit stop since October 20, 1991, at Texas World Speedway.
Brian Simo, Mosport's two-time defending champion, says: "The extra 25 miles is definitely going to have an effect on the race. In a 125-mile race, tires and tire compound selection play an even bigger role than usual in a team's strategy."
* Tire Selection Critical - While final tire selection will depend on the weather and the wear rates observed during practice, the longer race distance may dictate that teams use the harder #75 compound of the BFGoodrich* g-ForceTM T/A* radial. In the past, most teams used the softer #200 compound at Mosport.
"Compound choice will be a very important element in a team's strategy," said Gary Blalock, BFGoodrich Tires lead engineer. "If the teams choose the soft compound, they may have to balance their choice with a more conservative set-up on their cars."
* Mosport Is Drivers' Track - Mosport, one of the most demanding courses on the Trans-Am schedule, features both high-speed corners and a long straightaway. "Mosport is a fast, technical track that puts everyone to the test," said Brian Simo. "It's certainly always challenging, and the fact that this year's race is longer and will now include a pit stop makes it even more so."
* Battle for BFGoodrich* Tires Cup Heats Up - Lou Gigliotti and Johnny Miller, tied at 53 points, currently sit atop the standings for the BFGoodrich* Tires Cup. Challengers for year-end honors include Kenny Wilden and Tommy Archer (both with 44 points) and defending BFGoodrich Tires Cup Champion Brian Simo (42 points).
* Canadian Drivers in Mosport Field - Kenny Wilden, Oakville, Ontario and Jerry Simmons, Anacaster, Ontario.
* Trans-Am Series on Speedvision - The Trans-Am Series race from Mosport will be broadcast live on May 20 at 1:00 p.m. EDT on the Speedvision Network.
