After two rounds of practice, Stu Hayner sits P2
Denver - August 30, 2002 - This morning the Trans Am cars were the first to test the new Denver temporary street circuit. In no time at all, Stu Hayner in the #02 Trenton Forging Corvette was setting the pace.
"We saw the track yesterday and immediately went to work, " commented crew chief, Shane Duhaime. "We reviewed our data from previous street circuits and applied some logic to the similarities in this track. We obviously weren't far off. We tweaked it a little more for the afternoon session and left the rest up to Stu."
Hayner agreed. "We were pretty good this morning. Although with a new circuit, you get a little overwhelmed with everything that's going on. You're trying to find you're way around and you're trying to shake the car down too. No one has ever seen the course.... so it's a lot coming at you at once."
Hayner continued. "At the end of the morning session I thought we had a bad plug or something. Even though we finished up P2, I was confident we'd come out stronger in the afternoon. And, I was starting to get comfortable with the track."
The course is a temporary street circuit that crosses over the streets of Denver, the parking lot of the Pepsi Center and an occasional commercial access road. It combines asphalt and cement surfaces with higher than average crowns.
Sure enough, in the afternoon session, Hayner backed up is morning P2 result beating his own time by another 7/10 of a second.
