Johnny Miller Looks To Regain His Points Lead With A Win At Sears Point
Sonoma, Calif. - Johnny Miller, driver of the No.64 AutomationDirect/Cutler-Hammer Jaguar XKR, looks to regain his lead in the championship title hunt as the Trans-Am Series for the BFGoodrich Tires Cup returns to Sears Point Raceway for the Wine Country 100 on July 20-21. Miller took the points lead after the third race of the season at Mosport and maintained it until the fifth race at Cleveland. Despite a strong third place showing, he dropped to second in the standings behind teammate Paul Gentilozzi.
"Having the points lead is a serious motivator for me and I'd like to get it back," said Miller, who scored his first Trans-Am win at the 2000 season finale at San Diego. "It didn't make me any more conservative in my driving, but forced me to try harder."
Miller, who has never competed at Sears Point, knows that he'll have a steep learning curve. "A lot of drivers will have an advantage here," said Miller, who has 24 top-five finishes to his credit. "Anyone who has competed or tested here in any series will have track familiarity and that's so important. But that's OK, I'm always up for a challenge. We have limited track time so I'll just have to adapt well and quickly.
"This is a very technical, three dimensional track, a lot like Road America, Road Atlanta, and Laguna Seca," continued Miller. "You've got to be able to turn on the spot. If not, one mistake leads to another mistake. Conversely, one good turn also leads to another good one.
"I think we'll find some of the fastest parts are not necessarily on the straightaways," revealed Miller. "You drive this track from a fundamental road racing perspective for turn in points and apexes. Beyond that, you have to have faith in your car and assume that no one else is there and you end up in the right spot.
"I'm getting a little tired of second and third place finishes this year," quipped Miller, who has four top-three finishes this season. "I really want another win. But if we don't have the car or the ability to win on any given day, then I need to capitalize on what I've got since I'm in a points battle for the title."
"I'm ready for a good race," concluded Miller. "I'll be at 110% all day."
