Las Vegas, Nev. -- Boris Said, in the #33 Applied Computer Solutions Ford Mustang Cobra, won the Johnson Controls 100 this afternoon in Round 11 of the BFGoodrich Tires Trans-Am Series at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. For Said the win was his first in the series since winning at Road America in 1995. Craig Baird (#0 Alan Ferguson Racing Chevrolet Camaro) finished second in just his second start in a BFGoodrich Tires Trans-Am Series race. Said also picked up the Simple Green Clean Sweep Award for starting from the pole, leading the most laps, having the fastest race lap and winning the race.
The race was shortened to 33 laps due to rain that started just as the race began. After 28 laps the entire course was Black Flagged for 15 minutes so that the cars could come into the pits and change to rain tires.
"These were probably some of the hardest conditions to race in," said Said. "It took a long time to heat the tires because it was drizzling and dark. Friday's practice in the rain gave us the setup that we would need if it rained and we were able to change to that during the pit stop. This was a game of mistakes and as the winner I made the least amount of mistakes. We came here with a great car and my hat is off to Mike Davis and the crew."
"We are very happy with finishing second in only our second race in the series," said Baird. "I don't have any future plans, but I would certainly like to move to America and race in this series. To move here wouldn't be hard because I have lived in several different countries."
Jeff Altenburg (#5 Steele Racing Jaguar XKR) clinched the Red Line Rookie of the Year Award with a fith place finish this afternoon. "This certainly will help in securing sponsorships for the 2001 season," said Altenburg. "My goal at the beginning of the season was to win the Rookie of the Year Award and to finish in the top-five in points. Jack Willes was a strong adversary, but it seemed like I had a little more dependable equipment."
Willy T. Ribbs (#16 Simple Green Chevrolet Camaro) won the Johnson Controls Triple Challenge with a fourth place finish. Ribbs finished second in the first Johnson Controls 100 at Long Beach and third in Detroit at the second Triple Challenge race picks up a bonus of $20,000. "This was the only championship that we were capable of winning," said Ribbs. "We just happend to be in the right place at the right time."
Drivers' Championship leader Paul Gentilozzi (#1 Johnson Controls HomeLink Jaguar XKR) finished 30th after suffering severe front end damage when he came in contact with the wall. "We got zero points today," said Gentilozzi. "But at least we still have the lead in the points standings and that's the important thing. There's nothing more we can do until the green flag flies next weekend."
Going into the final round of the season, Gentilozzi leads Brian Simo 248 to 232. Altenburg (189), Leighton Reese (171) and Chris Neville (157) round out the top-five.
