Stu Hayner wins Westward Tools/Tough Times Award at Lime Rock; coming up 5 laps short wins Hayner Series recognition.
Detroit - May 31, 2002 - While the Revolution Motorsports #02 Trenton Forging Corvette, driven by Stu Hayner, may have fallen short of the checkers, it wasn't for lack of effort.
Westward Tools has chosen Stu Hayner to receive the Westward Tool Tough Time Award at Lime Rock Park. After leading laps 46 through 60, Hayner's #02 Trenton Forging Corvette's engine let go due to a part failure. Hayner was not only the most consistent car on the track he was the fastest. On lap 49, Hayner turned a 0:52.892. He was the only driver to break the 53-second mark. In fact, he was .343 seconds faster than the second fastest lap held by Boris Said.
"We had the car, we had the strategy and we had the lead," said Hayner. "Something in the motor let go with just a few laps remaining. I'm happy for the team to receive this award. I know this team is a winner. The crew is first rate and they were terrific all weekend."
A yellow flag came out on lap 40 with Paul Gentilozzi [#3 Johnson Controls Jaguar] in the lead and Hayner's #02 Trenton Forging Corvette in second. As the two cars came onto the front straight, the pits suddenly opened. Gentilozzi dove into pit lane for his only stop while Hayner stayed out.
On the restart, with the lead in hand, Hayner pulled off a brilliant move. The #02 Trenton Forging Corvette shot down the front straight past the flag and by the first turn, Hayner had opened up a commanding lead. Hayner and the Revolution Motorsports' car had simply "checked out!"
"I knew what I wanted to do with the restart," said Stu. "I held the car back a bit... leaving just enough room to catch the pace car just as it dove into the pits. It worked... next thing I knew I was at the end of the straight with no one in my mirrors. After that, I cruised. My lap times were consistent ... it just felt good. Like my son, Kyle, says.. I was in the zone," he laughed.
"We knew our strategy going into the race," said Stu. "But, you have to see how the race unfolds before you can actually implement your plan. Everything was going according to plan..... until the motor let go. The team put a really good race car under me."
Westward Tools sponsors the "Tough Tools/Tough Times Award," which awards a $500 credit to the team that is deemed to have faced hard luck during a given Trans-Am event. Fans also have the opportunity to nominate a driver for the "Tough Tools/Tough Times Award" for each event.
Fans can submit their vote at www.trans-amseries.com. Following each race, an online voting POLL opens and remains open thru the following Wednesday.
Additionally, fans voting for the team that wins the "Tough Tools/Tough Times Award" are entered into a drawing for a 14.4-volt cordless drill, as well as other Westward Trans-Am tools. The program also includes a season-ending "Tough Tools/Tough Times Award" which will reward a $2,500 credit to the Trans-Am team that is deemed to have had the most bad luck during the season, by vote of the fans.
Next, the Trans-Am Series for the BFGoodrich Tires Cup moves to Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington, Ohio for the Grand Prix of Mid-Ohio. The race is Saturday, June 29 and will air at 4pm on CBS Sports, [same day tape delay].
In association with Trenton Forging, Revolution Motorsports will campaign two 2002 Chevrolet Corvettes as part of the Trans-Am Series for the BF Goodrich Cup. All events are nationally televised on CBS and Speed channel (formerly Speedvision). The Trans-Am Series is the oldest form of American sports car racing.
