MEDICAL UPDATE ON NTB TRANS-AM DRIVER INVOLVED IN ACCIDENT AT TROIS-RIVIERES 6:30 p.m. EDT TROIS-RIVIERES, Quebec, Can. (August 3, 1998) Doug Mayr, 42, of Franklin, Wis., who was involved in a lap-seven accident during the NTB Trans-Am race at Trois-Rivieres, underwent successful surgery today to repair a broken and dislocated vertebrae in his neck. Mayr had been fitted with a halo traction device which did not fully restore the dislocation, necessitating surgery.

Doug underwent five hours of surgery, and did very well, said Dr. Ron Krome, SCCA Pro Racing Medical Director. He is not paralyzed, and has full use of his limbs. He is a very lucky man.

Mayr is currently listed in stable condition, but will stay in the intensive care ward for the next 24 hours. Mayr will remain in the Ste. Marie Hospital in Trois-Rivieres for the next 48 to 72 hours, at which time he will be reevaluated for a possible release from the hospital.

Cards or flowers can be sent to Doug Mayr at: Ste. Marie Hospital, 1991 Boulevarde du Carmel, Trois-Rivieres, Quebec, Can., J8Z 3R9. Flowers cannot be delivered until he is moved from intensive care to a regular hospital room. The Mayr family has requested that no donations be sent.
