SMITHTOWN, N.Y. (Sept. 24, 2004) -- Joey Scarallo, driver of the No. 06 Toyo Tires/ROH Wheels/Group A -- Autotrend Chevrolet Corvette, won the 2004 Motorock Trans-Am Series BBS Wheels Most Improved Driver as voted by his fellow competitors. The award, which was first granted in 1982, is determined in a vote by those competitors who raced in at least half of this year's events.
"I am honored to be the 2004 BBS Wheels Most Improved Driver," said Scarallo. "It's a great feeling to be recognized by my fellow competitors.
"Last year was a very tough year," added Scarallo. "I didn't have the resources to compete as I would have liked to, but this year my situation was different. I teamed with Baucom Motorsports this year and that made a huge difference in my performance."
Baucom Motorsports prepared Scarallo's car during 2004. The veteran team also fields the No. 86 Ford Mustang driven by driver/owner John Baucom, who was the 2003 recipient of the BBS Most Improved Driver award.
"My situation this year allowed me to do what I love most -- drive," said Scarallo. "This year I had crew working on the car, which lifted a huge burden off of my mind."
Scarallo plans to return to Trans-Am Racing in 2004 and hopes to achieve even greater goals.
"I have another year of Trans-Am under my belt," said Scarallo. "If you thought I improved this year, just wait until 2005."
Scarallo achieved a career-best fourth place finish at this year's Albertson's Trans-Am 100 in Portland, Ore. He completed his sophomore year with five top-ten finishes and placed a career-best seventh in Series points.
A longtime racer, Scarallo has been in the driver's seat since he was 11, racing karts in the Long Island Karting Association, where he won three championships in 1993. Scarallo won championships in the International Karting Federation in 1996, and recorded three top-ten finishes in the U.S. F2000 where he finished 14th in series points. He ran a limited schedule in 1997, scoring 11th- and 12th-place finishes in his three starts. Scarallo also competed in the Toyota Atlantic Series in 2000.
Born in Adelaide, Australia, Scarallo, 25, lives in Smithtown, N.Y. He manages Autotrend Tire and Wheel Company Inc., his family's wheel importing business, the only U.S. distributor of ROH Wheels, in Lindenhurst, N.Y.
