St. Petersburg Extends Agreement

June 19, 1998

ST. PETERSBURG -- The St. Petersburg City Council has approved a 3-year extension of the Florida Grand Prix's agreement with the City of St. Petersburg, paving the way for 5 more years of racing throught the downtown streets.

The 1999 Florida Grand Prix, one of Tampa Bay area's premier entertainment events, is scheduled to take place February 19-21 in St. Petersburg.

"We are pleased with the extension of our agreement to conduct the Grand Prix through the year 2003," said Florida Grand Prix President/CEO Thomas Begley. "It is an affirmation of what we have achieved the last two years: the creation of an exciting, first-class entertainment experience, projecting a positive image of St. Petersburg internationally and providing a solid economic impact for the Bay Area market."

Last year's Florida Grand Prix featured the kick-off for the SCCA Pro-Racing Trans-Am Championship, won by Tommy Kendall. The Grand Prix also ran several support races, including the SCCA World Challenge, the Barber Dodge Pro Series, the U.S. F2000, the SCCA Pro Spec Racer Ford Pro Series.

The 1999 event promises more of the same racing smorgasbord with the addition of a Celebrity Challenge Charity Race, featuring Hollywood stars, professional athletes, local celebrities and local media personalitie.

"The inclusion of the Celebrity Challenge race, will certainly provide an exciting addition to our weekend," said Begley. "We expect high demand for the sale of a limited number of seats available to the corporate community to actually drive in the race with these celebrities. Discussions are ongoing with several sanctioning bodies to supply cars or trucks for the race. Our goal is to raise a lot of money for local charities and have fun doing it!"

The New Dodge, Bayfront Medical Center, Bayprint, U.S. Checkbyte, Island Automated Medical Services, Inc., Focus Financial Data Services, Inc., the Renaissance Vinoy Resort, American Business Suites, the Garden Restaurant, Office Furniture Brokers and Ferg's Sports Bar are already aboard as sponsors.

The Florida Grand Prix of St. Petersburg has a full range of sponsorship packages available. Various programs include National TV coverage, hospitality, signage, expo space and product sampling. Over $750,000 in electronic and media value is in place for Florida's premiere street race event.

Over 100,000 fans are expected for the three-day event. The estimated economic impact on the St. Petersburg-Tampa Bay economy is $10-12 million.
