Steve Knepper of Belleville, Ill. is expected to open defense of his 1997 USAC 16th Street Midget Series Championship this Saturday night as the USAC National Midget Series visits the 1/4 mile dirt oval located in the former Bush Stadium baseball park in Indianapolis, Ind.

Knepper won eight races on his way to the 1997 title, including one streak of four in a row.

Chris Schultz of Indianapolis, Ind. and Jimmy McCune of Toledo, Ohio lead the USAC National Midget standings, closely pursued by April 5 Winchester, Ind. feature winner Ricky Shelton, last year's USAC "Western States" Midget Champ.

Practice at 16th Street Speedway starts at 5 p.m. Qualifying gets underway at 6 and racing begins at 7. A 40-lap feature is on tap.

Other top entered drivers include National Champion Jason Leffler, Indianapolis Speedrome Midget Champ Michael Lang, track National record holder Jay Drake, Speedrome Midget "Rookie of then Year" John Sluss, plus Jack Hewitt, Tracy Hines and Robby Flock.
