Dave Steele of Tampa, Fla. leads the new USAC National Midget Car Series standings after his victory in Sunday's 50-lap "Glen Niebel Classic" feature at the Anderson (Ind.) Speedway. He holds a 20-point lead over defending series champion Dave Darland going into the Firestone Indy 225 weekend at the Nazareth (Pa.) Speedway April 19-21.
Steele, who also won the "Copper World" series opener March 17 at Phoenix (Ariz.) International Raceway, led the final 16 laps of Sunday's race in the Dino Tomassi/Mopar Parts/Finish Line Towing Mopar/Beast. Bobby East, who led the first 34 laps of Sunday's 50-lapper before yielding to Steele, finished fourth behind Steele, J.J. Yeley and Teddy Beach. Darland rounded out the "top-five" at the checkered flag.
Aaron Fike posted the fastest qualifying time, while heats went to Beach, Aaron Pierce, Chris Gabehart and A.J. Felker. East won the semi.
The Midgets join the USAC Weld Racing Silver Crown Cars, the Stoops Freightliner USAC Sprint Cars and the Indy Racing League for the Nazareth events April 19-21.
