Gordon seeks record-tying 5th "Little 500" win in Saturday'S 55th Payless/Delco Remy Classic at Anderson.

Three-time USAC National Sprint Car runner-up Eric Gordon of Indianapolis, Ind. seeks a record-tying fifth victory in the PayLess/Delco Remy "Little 500" Sprint Car classic Saturday night at the Anderson (Ind.) Speedway. A victory would make him only the second driver to win three straight 500-lappers at the 1/4-mile paved oval. Bob Frey won four in a row (1987-1990) and is the only five-time race winner.

Gordon leads a strong contingent of Sprint Car drivers from across the country into the event which kicks off with practice on Wednesday. Qualifying for the 33 starting positions is slated Thursday and Friday and Saturday night's 500-lap race starts at 8 pm. Included among the entered drivers is 2002 "Rookie of the Race" Tony Hunt of Fair Oaks, Calif., who won USAC's 2001 Western Sprint Car title.

Practice for the race, which offers a total purse of over $122,000, is scheduled Wednesday from 11 am to 3 pm. On Thursday, practice commences at 11:30 am, with round one of qualifying slated from 1:30-3:30 pm. Friday's practice at noon, with final qualifying from 1:30-3:30 pm and a "non-qualifiers" race is scheduled on Friday night at 7 pm.

Two pit stops are required during the 500-lap contest, the nation's highest-paying pavement event for Sprint cars. Former race winners besides Gordon expected to compete are Jeff Bloom, Dave Steele, Chet Fillip and Bentley Warren. Bloom will be trying for a fourth victory in the race to join Frey and Gordon in that exclusive club.

Last year's Gordon's take from the "Little 500" amounted to over $36,000! The 33-car field will take the green flag in the traditional 3-abreast formation.
