Jay Drake is closing in on his first USAC National driving championship, holding a 141-point lead over runner-up Bud Kaeding going into the season's final races at Perris, Calif. Oct. 28-30 and Phoenix, Ariz. Nov. 4-6.

Drake flipped during Wednesday night's race at Charlotte, N.C. but came back to finish ninth in Saturday night's race at Woodstock, Ga.

Levi Jones of Olney, Ill. notched his initial USAC feature win with a dramatic last-lap pass of Troy Cline to win the "Mopar Sprint Car Nationals" 25-lapper at The Dirt Track @ Lowe's Motor Speedway near Charlotte Wednesday. Cline, last year's Charlotte USAC winner, led 22 laps before yielding to Jones at the checkered flag. Tracy Hines, Don Droud, Jr. and J.J. Yeley completed the "top-five" behind Jones' Lucas Oil Products/Karavan Trailer Maxim/Gaerte. Dickie Gaines led two laps (19-20) before sliding into the outside wall on lap 21.

Jon Stanbrough put his Truckers 24 Hour Road Service/NAPA Competition Welding/Gaerte in victory lane Saturday night, winning the 30-lap "Papa John's Sprint Car Nationals" feature at Dixie Speedway in Woodstock, Ga. He was followed by Yeley, Cory Kruseman, Josh Ford and Matt Westfall. Westfall led the first five laps, Stanbrough led the next 16, then Kruseman led a lap before Stanbrough took over for good.

Three drivers were transported to hospitals following crashes at Charlotte and Woodstock. Jimmy Weller III of Liberty, Ohio suffered critical head injuries in a flip at Charlotte but was showing improvement at the Carolinas Regional Medical Center Sunday. William Moore was awaiting release Sunday from Northeast Medical Center in Concord, N.C. following surgery on his fractured right elbow. John Heydenreich was checked, then released from a Georgia hospital after flipping at Dixie Speedway Saturday night.
