PIERCE TITLE CONTENDER AGAIN WITH CHICAGOLAND SILVER CROWN WIN
INDIANAPOLIS -- From practice to qualifying to the race Friday at Chicagoland Speedway, Aaron Pierce was the fastest car on the 1.5-mile track.
Pierce asserted himself again as a title contender in USAC Silver Crown Series presented by K&N Engineering competition, winning the "USG Fiberock 100" after leading 26 laps -- including the final seven -- for his first career series victory.
"It feels great; it's been a long time coming," said Pierce, who averaged 145.934 mph in the No. 26 Sam Pierce Chevrolet/Fatheadz Sunglasses Riley/Chevy.
Pierce, who now calls Phoenix, Ariz. home, set the fastest speeds in the morning's practice and qualifying sessions, then fought with Jay Drake throughout the 67-lap race, one which saw four lead changes and only two caution periods.
Rookies Pete Shepherd III and Bryn Gohn earned the first podium finishes of their careers, taking second and third, with Team 6-R teammates Dave Steele and Brian Tyler finishing fourth and fifth.
Pierce closed within 17 points of third in the standings, despite falling out of the previous two Silver Crown races.
Point leader Bud Kaeding suffered his first DNF of the season after posting 31 laps with ignition problems. His lead slipped to six over Brian Tyler heading into next weekend's "Milwaukee 100" at The Milwaukee Mile in West Allis, Wis., which shares the card with the USAC National Midget Car Series and the Indy Racing League IndyCar and Indy Pro Series.
