Classic races return to Terre Haute

"Sumar Classic" & "Hut Hundred" Return To Terre Haute Action Track

Not since the checkered flag dropped on Jack Hewitt on September 17, 1999 at the Terre Haute Action Track has the USAC Silver Crown "Sumar Classic" been contested at the 1/2-mile Indiana dirt track.

A similar scenario is true for the "Hut Hundred" USAC Midget Car race. Dave Darland crossed the finish line first on September 1, 1999 at the Action Track, but since then the event has been held at Lincoln Park Speedway in Putnamville, Ind.

Now, thanks to the collaboration of Terre Haute First National Bank, Clabber Girl Corporation and the Terre Haute Convention & Visitors Bureau, they're both back at Terre Haute!

The "Sumar Classic" is scheduled for Saturday, June 1, while the "Hut Hundred" is slated for Wednesday, July 3 and will include a fireworks display in honor of our nation's independence.

"We couldn't be happier to have Terre Haute First, Clabber Girl and the Convention & Visitors Bureau supporting the Action Track," said race organizer Bob Sargent. "We are sure these events will be huge successes and will be great for race fans in the area as well."

Defending race champions are Tracy Hines, who won the "Hut Hundred" at Putnamville last year, and Jack Hewitt, the 1999 "Sumar Classic" winner.

Only one driver has been able to win both races. Donnie Beechler of Springfield, Ill. won the "Sumar Classic" in 1995 and 1997 and the "Hut Hundred" in 1998.

In addition, bonus prizes totalling $4,250 have been posted for participants in the "Sumar Classic," including $2,500 in lap money and $1,750 in cash awards to the top three finishers ($1,000-$500-$250). The "top-three" prizes are courtesy of Terre Haute First National Bank while the lap prizes are an amalgamation of efforts involving Terre Haute First National Bank, Clabber Girl and the Action Track.
