Jimmy Sills pulled a hat trick of sorts when he won just about everything that mattered in a three day period here in So-Cal. The afternoon after he brought home the lion's share of a $40,000+ purse at the Perris Auto Speedway, Sills dominated the final event of the USAC Silver Crown Championship season, The Del Mar 100 to take the win and the championship. Not since October 1949 had the roar of the 'big cars' been heard where 'the turf meets the surf' on the mile at the Del Mar Fairgrounds. A crowd of 15,631 was on hand to see the history making end of almost two weeks of a celebration of motorsport in the area.
