KUHN, WILLIAMS, HENDRICK WIN USAC SPEEDROME TITLES; MOCKLER LEADS 1-2-3 FEMALE FOCUS FINISH

INDIANAPOLIS -- Hoosiers Brad Kuhn of Avon, Jamie Williams of Columbus and Jonathan Hendrick of Fortville on Wednesday claimed their initial USAC championships, earning titles in the "Thursday Night Thunder" series at the Blossom Chevrolet Indianapolis Speedrome.

Kuhn won three times during the 2005 campaign to earn the Speedrome Regional Midget Championship. His third-place finish Wednesday behind winner Nick Bohanon of Jeffersonville, Ind. and Mel Kenyon gave him a 21-point benefit in the final standings after 12 races.

"We got away from here when USAC got away from it, and with USAC coming back, we returned," Kuhn said. "There is a lot of history here, with Rich Vogler, Michael Lang and Ted Hines, so it's good to join that list of champions."

Bohanon, in the No. 33 Bohanon Paint & Body/Charlestown Monument Beast/Stanton Mopar, stole the thunder on the final lap of the 50-lapper, nudging Kenyon in Turn 3 on the 1/5-mile paved oval and leading the final lap. Trailing Kuhn were Joe Liguori and Chris Manifold.

Williams won twice in Speedrome Ford Focus Midget Car Series competition en route to that series title. He was the top male finisher in Wednesday's race, which was dominated by female drivers. Stephanie Mockler led the final 16 laps in the Mark Frew-owned Regal Printing Spike/Ford Focus, taking the point from Erica Santos. Alison MacLeod, also a victor on the circuit this season, passed Santos in the waning laps for second. Ricky Ehrgott, the July 28 winner, finished fifth.

Williams, in his second season on the Speedrome Ford Focus tour, beat Speedrome master Josh Clemons by 51 points in the series standings. Clemons finished sixth Wednesday.

"Our goal was to come out here and run consistently," Williams said. "I have to thank everyone for their help and support. My family stuck by me, and I'm really happy."

The sweep of the Top 3 positions by Mockler, MacLeod and Santos is believed to be the first for females in a nationally sanctioned event.

Hendrick, an incoming freshman at Mt. Vernon High School in Indiana's Hancock County, notched the season opening Kenyon Midget Car Series race and another later in the season to post that series championship. He bested defending series champion Dakoda Armstrong by 36 points.

"We had a great year," Hendrick said. "I have to thank all of my sponsors and my crew chief."

Hendrick finished second Wednesday behind Chris Windom, who earned his initial USAC career victory. Windom, of Peoria, Ill., inherited the lead from Sam Imel on Lap 35 and led the rest of the way in the No. 59 Kenyon/Yamaha. Hendrick took the runner-up slot ahead of Jacob Wilson on the last lap. Blake Fitzpatrick, Wilson and Zach Leeke rounded out the Top 5.
