Hines leads Sprints to Cedar Rapids & Terre Haute
Tracy Hines of New Castle, Ind., fresh from his third "Border Wars" championship, leads the USAC National Sprint Car Series to races this Friday and Saturday nights respectively at Cedar Rapids, Iowa and Terre Haute, Ind.
Friday's event is the Advance Auto Parts "Doubleheader" presented by Papa John's at the 1/2-mile paved Hawkeye Downs oval in Cedar Rapids. Also featuring the USAC National Midgets, the program begins with practice at 6 pm and qualifying at 7. Racing starts at 8.
Saturday's race is the 33rd Annual "Tony Hulman Classic" at the 1/2-mile dirt Terre Haute Action Track. Practice there starts at 5 pm, with qualifying slated at 6 and racing at 7. Thirty-lap features are on tap at each track.
Hines leads J.J. Yeley by 14 points entering the two weekend races. They finished 1-2 in last year's standings.
Yeley swept last year's Cedar Rapids "doubleheader" but will face a stiff challenge from Hines, who holds the 1-lap USAC track record.
Jon Stanbrough is the defending champion of the "Tony Hulman Classic" and will try to become the first driver to win the race back-to-back since Steve Butler in 1987 and 1988 when it was held at Terre Haute and Indianapolis Raceway Park. In the 28 previous Terre Haute runnings of the classic, no driver has been able to put together back-to-back wins!
