SPRINGFIELD, Ill. -- August 19, 2006 - Jerry Coons Jr. and the Carl Edwards/ R.E. Technologies Racing team racked up another top five finish and jumped two places in the points race Saturday at the Tony Bettenhausen 100 at the Illinois State Fairgrounds. The team entered the Springfield track this morning looking to move up from their fifth place position in the owner's points. Jerry Coons and the team have a history of success at the dirt mile and were looking to repeat their past performances.

Rain showers overnight made the track a little different from what the USAC Silver Crown competitors were used too. The first time the No. 199 hit the track, Coons timed in 11th quick during practice. The team adjusted for the changing track and Coons was able to turn a qualifying time good for 11th. When the green flag dropped, Coons took it easy on his tires, saving them for the end. By the midpoint in the race, tires became a factor.

"We had to be a little conservative on tires today," said Coons. "Cars started dropping out in front of us. We had to keep our nose clean."

Coons took care of his tires and late in the race received an assist from his crewmembers.

"The team was on top of communicating with me what my tires looked like," said the veteran driver. "I would roll the car down low on the front stretch and letting them look at the tire during cautions so they could see what it looked like. With the way the track was, the tires were getting pretty bald."

Jerry Coons took care of his tires and made the right moves at the end to finish 5th. In scoring the team's third top five finish of the season. Coons was able to move the team up in the owner's points to third.

"It was a good points day for the team," smiled Jerry Coons. "That is where we want to be so we are going to keep plugging along and see if I can help get them up further the next dirt race."

The race also gives the team two top ten finishes in the two, one-mile dirt oval races this season. The third and final dirt mile oval race of the season comes in two weeks at DuQuoin.

"I believe we have a good baseline for DuQuoin. We usually run really strong there. I am looking to get back on the front row at DuQuoin and go for a win."

TOUGH DAY FOR ROOKIE

USAC Rookie, Ricky Stenhouse had a tough day at the track. The young Olive Branch, Mississippi native qualified 22nd. Shortly after taking the green flag at the beginning of the race, Stenhouse made contact with two cars that sent the No. 35 flipping through the air coming to rest on the turn two guardrail. Ricky Stenhouse Jr. was not injured in the accident but the car was destroyed. Stenhouse was listed as finishing 28th.
