Tony Elliott of Kokomo, Ind. wasn't going to let the Pennzoil "Indiana Sprint Week" championship elude him this year. After losing last year's championship to Dave Darland by a single point, he came back this year to win the six-race series title by 29 points over 1997 champion J.J. Yeley, with Darland taking third. Elliott will be among favorites for victory when the Stoops Freightliner Sprint Car series resumes action this Sunday night at his "home" track - the Kokomo (Ind.) Speedway. A 30-lap feature is on tap at the 1/4-mile dirt oval after practice at 5 pm, qualifying at 6 and preliminary races, starting at 7. Tracy Hines and the Willoughby Stealth Special cruised to victory in Wednesday night's Pennzoil "Indiana Sprint Week" finale at the Eldora Speedway in Rossburg, Ohio. He passed Cary Faas on the 15th lap and never looked back, beating Jack Hewitt, Bill Rose, J.J. Yeley and Brian Tyler to the checkered flag in the 30-lapper. Elliott, who needed only an 11th to clinch the six-race series crown, was eighth. Darland, who finished sixth a Eldora, continues to lead Hines by 114 points in the Stoops Freightliner Sprint Car standings going into Sunday's Kokomo race. Scott Orr won Wednesday's "non-qualifiers" race, while heats went to Cory Kruseman, Brian Tyler, Roger Chaudion and Kevin Doty. Todd Kane won the True Value semi and Jimmy Sills was the Turbines, Inc. fast qualifier.
