Fresh off a come-from-behind win over J.J. Yeley in this afternoon’s USAC National Midget Car Series race, Dave Steele chased down Yeley once again to win the 30-lap USAC National Sprint Car Series feature at Nazareth Speedway.
“I think I just got the hang of this place,” Steele said after winning his second race of the day. “I think this is a tricky track to try to get around. The car was really good, and it got better the longer we ran, which might explain why it was running stronger at the end. It was decent at first, but the longer we ran, the stronger it got.
“We probably were the underdogs here. Yeley got a lot of attention focused on him – and deservedly so, he does a good job – but I think so far our car has been hooked up.”
Yeley, who was attempting to add to his record-breaking single season USAC win total, had to settle for second. “It’s disappointing, but it was a better run than what we had in the midget,” he said. “I got the jump out there and it seemed pretty good until about five or six laps into the race when my car started to get a little loose.”
Steele took advantage of Yeley’s ill handling car, passing him on lap 22 and leading the next eight laps en route to his second sprint car win of the year.
Tracy Hines finished third, followed by Eric Gordon and Marc Jessup.
Yeley, on a quest to become only the second driver to win all three major USAC titles in the same season, still has a comfortable 277 point lead over Hines in the drivers’ championship.
The SPEED Channel will broadcast this race on Saturday night at 8 p.m.
