YELEY TO COMPETE IN USAC RACE DURING CARQUEST 250 WEEKEND

ST. LOUIS, MO (July 22, 1999) - Fans attending the NASCAR CARQUEST 250 Busch Grand National event at the 1.25-mile Gateway Raceway oval will get a bonus feature Friday night, July 30th as the USAC Coors Light Silver Bullet Series will also be competing in the SHOP 'N SAVE 100.

One of the leading contenders of the 80-lap SHOP 'N SAVE 100 will be defending event champion J.J. Yeley and his CARQUEST Auto Parts-backed Silver Bullet car.

A year ago, Yeley, 22, of Phoenix, earned his second career USAC Coors Light Silver Bullet win at Gateway, driving the Zarounian-Helmling entry to the winner's circle.20

"We are basically going to have the same setup we used last year at Gateway," Yeley said. "It worked then and it should work now."

Yeley last competed July 17th at Nazereth Speedway. There he earned a seventh place finish and moved to fourth in the USAC Silver Bullet points, 92 points behind leader Ryan Newman.

Coors Light Silver Bullet Point Standings: 1-Newman-290; 2-Gamester-279; 3-Tyler-273; 4-YELEY-198; 5-Hines-186; 6-Leffler-169; 7-Flock-168; 8-Hewitt-158; 9-Fillip-157; 10-Hieber-155.

"We are still in the hunt for the championship and nothing would help any better than to win again at Gateway in front of all the CARQUEST people," Yeley said. "We are all confident we can repeat last season's performance."

Spectator gates for the USAC SHOP 'N SAVE 100 open Friday, July 30th at 10 a.m. (CDT) with the first practice session from 11 a.m. to 12 noon. The second practice session will be from 12:30 p.m. to 1 p.m. Qualifying is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. and the 15-lap non-qualifiers race will start at 4:30 p.m. The green flag is scheduled to drop for the SHOP 'N SAVE 100 at 9 p.m. The CARQUEST 250 will be shown LIVE on TNN the following day at 9 p.m.

The Zarounian-Helmling Motorsports team is comprised of Rollie Helmling and Gary Zarounian. In the past two seasons, Zarounian-Helmling Motorsports has had the best record in the Silver Crown Series with four wins and nine top four finishes in only a 21 race run. In winning the last two races of the year, Zarounian-Helmling Motorsports is set to make an all out assault on the 1999 USAC Silver Crown Series Championship.

J.J. Yeley is a Phoenix, Arizona native; the 22-year-old Yeley is one of the brightest stars of open wheel racing today. The son of Judy and "Cactus" Jack Yeley, a seven time Arizona midget and two-time "World of Outlaws" midget champion, J.J. has made his presence known in midgets, sprint cars, Silver Crown and Indy Cars. J.J. was the youngest driver to compete in the 1998 Indianapolis 500 and he finished 9th. After winning many Sprint Car races in Arizona and California, J.J. came to the Midwest in 1997 to tackle the USAC Sprint Car Series, winning 5 events in his first season. Last he finished the season sixth in USAC Silver Crown points, with victories at Sacramento and St. Louis, his first two career Silver Crown victories. He had four top five finishes and was the only competitor in 1998 to win on dirt and pavement. This season J.J. will wheel the CARQUEST Silver Crown car at all fifteen of the United States Auto Club - Coors Light Silver Bullet Series races with his ultimate goal winning the USAC Silver Crown Championship for the CARQUEST-sponsored Zarounian-Helmling Motorsports team.
