YELEY READIES FOR THE DIRT AT A.J. FOYT'S HULMAN-HOOSIER HUNDRED
INDIANAPOLIS (May 28, 1999) - Last season in USAC Coors Light Silver Bullet action, J.J. Yeley was the only competitor to win on both the asphalt and the dirt. This Friday evening at the Indiana State Fairgrounds, Yeley and the No. 67 CARQUEST team will race on dirt for the first time this season, competing in the 19th annual True Value A.J. Foyt's "Hoosier-Hulman Hundred."
A week ago at Indianapolis Raceway Park, a mechanical failure placed Yeley and the CARQUEST-sponsored Zarounian-Helmling Motorsports team in the rear of the field for the USAC Coca-Cola 100. Despite the poor start, Yeley's driving ability coupled with the 700 horsepower produced by a 355 cubic inch Gaerte Engine helped the CARQUEST Silver Bullet car make up the most positions in the race, moving from 29th to a 17th place finish.
"Starting in the rear last weekend really hurt us because we had a fast car," Yeley said. "We could have ran with Newman (the race winner and points leader). This weekend with a good qualifying effort, we'll get a better start and hopefully be in the front at the conclusion of the race."
Yeley is among almost 40 entrants in the 100-lap championship event to be contested on the historic Indiana State Fairgrounds' one-mile clay oval. Four drivers representing seven USAC Coors Light Silver Bullet Series championships are entered -- Jimmy Sills (3), Jack Hewitt (2), Dave Darland (1) and Jason Leffler (1).
Other USAC open-wheel champions competing with Yeley include past Stoops Freightliner/USAC sprint car titlists Brian Tyler (2) and Tony Elliott (1), past MCI WorldCom USAC National Midget champ Russ Gamester (1) and former MCI WorldCom USAC "Western" Midget champs Robby Flock (3) and Jay Drake (1).

JJ YELEY 85 The Zarounian-Helmling Motorsports team is comprised of Rollie Helmling and Gary Zarounian. In the past two seasons, Zarounian-Helmling Motorsports has had the best record in the Silver Crown Series with four wins and nine top four finishes in only a 21 race run. In winning the last two races of the year, Zarounian-Helmling Motorsports is set to make an all out assault on the 1999 USAC Silver Crown Series Championship.
J.J. Yeley is a Phoenix, Arizona native, the 22-year-old Yeley is one of the brightest stars of open wheel racing today. The son of Judy and "Cactus" Jack Yeley, a seven time Arizona midget and two-time "World of Outlaws" midget champion, J.J. has made his presence known in midgets, sprint cars, Silver Crown and Indy Cars. J.J. was the youngest driver to compete in the 1998 Indianapolis 500 and he finished 9th. After winning many Sprint Car races in Arizona and California, J.J. came to the Midwest in 1997 to tackle the USAC Sprint Car Series, winning 5 events in his first season. Last he finished the season sixth in USAC Silver Crown points, with victories at Sacramento and St. Louis, his first two career Silver Crown victories. He had four top five finishes and was the only competitor in 1998 to win on dirt and pavement. This season J.J. will wheel the CARQUEST Silver Crown car at all fifteen of the United States Auto Club - Coors Light Silver Bullet Series races with his ultimate goal winning the USAC Silver Crown Championship for the CARQUEST-sponsored Zarounian-Helmling Motorsports team.
