Darland-Drake Showdown Continues At Kansas City
The USAC Stoops Freightliner Sprint Car Series returns to Lakeside Speedway in Kansas City, Kans. for back-to-back "doubleheaders" Friday and Saturday nights, but unlike the last appearance in 1998 which was on the pavement, this weekend's events are on dirt!
The 1/2-mile oval has switched from pavement to dirt and will witness both USAC Sprint Car and USAC WorldCom National Midget Car competition both nights, with feature events on tap for both series each night. Practice each night starts at 5 pm, with qualifying set for 6 and racing at 7:30. Friday's features are 20 laps and Saturday's are 30.
Dave Darland of Lincoln, Ind. holds a 23-point lead over Jay Drake of Val Verde, Calif. after second and third-place finishes in races at Rossburg, Ohio June 22-23, but Dave is still nursing a sore right calf muscle suffered in a tangle during a June 13 race in northern Indiana. He will compete in one of two entered Arctic Cat/Red Line Oil Gaerte/Eagles at Kansas City.
Drake, on the other hand, scored his initial 2001 USAC feature victory in the June 22 race at Rossburg and hopes to continue the success he had in 2000 when he recorded a USAC-tying all-time record 19 feature victories in various series. He will pilot the WorldBestBuy.com/KECO Coatings/Hoosier Tire Gaerte/Stealth.
Defending USAC Stoops Freightliner Sprint Car Champion Tony Elliott of Kokomo, Ind. is also among early entries, as are 2000 USAC Coors Light Silver Bullet Champion Tracy Hines of New Castle, Ind., former USAC Western Sprint Car Champion Bud Kaeding of Campbell, Calif. and Jack Hewitt of Troy, Ohio, who will try to boost his second-best career total of 45 USAC Sprint Car wins. <pre> STOOPS FREIGHTLINER USAC SPRINT CAR SERIES STANDINGS
