KAEDING CORRALS WIN IN USAC SILVER CROWN SERIES KENTUCKY DEBUT
17.576-second margin of victory ranks second all-time at Kentucky Speedway
SPARTA, KY. -- USAC Silver Crown Series driver Bud Kaeding (No. 29 BK Leffler Motorpsports/Loan City-Team ASE/DRC/Shaver) started his Kentucky Speedway day strong by leading practice and winning the "Kentucky 100" pole award, but closed out the day stronger by taking a 17.576-second win over Wayne Reutimann, Jr., in the series first race at the facility.
The Campbell, Calif., driver who won the prestigious Knoxville Nationals just weeks ago, takes over the lead in the series standings with his first win, second straight top-five and fourth consecutive top-10 finish through as many races this season.
Kaeding started on the inside of the front row after turning the top qualifying circuit at 174.791 mph (30.894 seconds). He didn't take the lead until Lap 31 of 67 when he executed a high line pass of Brian Tyler (No. Team Six-R/Kroger-Bounty-Pringles-Tide/C&R/Mopar).
"I just seemed we had a better car than Brian. I think his car was going away," Kaeding said. "He had the lead toward the start of the race and we just caught up with him along the way. It's fortunate for our team because we've worked so hard all year. I had no clue we would lead like that. It was awesome just to have the opportunity to race on a track like this in front of the (NASCAR) Busch Series owners."
His margin of victory ranks second all-time at Kentucky Speedway. NASCAR driver Mike Bliss owns the track's all-time widest margin of victory after scoring an 18.197-second win in a 2003 Craftsman Truck Series race.
Tyler placed fourth and earned his third straight top-five and fourth top-10 finish of the season, but slips out of the lead in the championship standings.
"From Lap 1, the car was way too loose," Tyler said. "From the get-go, we knew we just had to salvage a good finish. When you are running for championship, it doesn't make a difference if you are running second or last, you just have to finish the race."
Tim Barber (No. 28 Ken Pierson/Eibach Springs-Shaver Motorsports/C&R/Chevrolet) finished third and Cole Carter (No. 41 Jim Paternoster /Ferris Industries-National Parts Peddler/Riley/Chevrolet) completed the top five.
Racing continues tomorrow at Kentucky Speedway with the NASCAR Busch Series "Meijer 300 Presented by Oreo." The speedway announced yesterday its 66,089 grandstand seats available for the event sold out for the sixth consecutive year. Forty-dollar standing-room-only-tickets are on sale now and can be purchased at speedway ticket booths, online at www.kentuckyspeedway.com or through Meijer stores.
Speedway parking lots open at 7:30 a.m. and gates open at 4:00 p.m., with "Meijer 300 Presented by Oreo" NASCAR Busch Series qualifying. Country music supergroup Lonestar will play a prerace concert at 6:00 p.m., and a 43-car field featuring eight NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series drivers such as Kevin Harvick, defending race champion Carl Edwards and former Kentucky Speedway race winners Greg Biffle and Kyle Busch take the green flag at 8:00 p.m. Cincinnati Bengals' quarterback Carson Palmer is the race honorary starter and Miss USA Tara Elizabeth Conner will be the race grand marshal.
