Leffler hangs on for sixth in Pikes Peak Silver Crown showdown.

FOUNTAIN, CO (June 17, 2002) - Despite an ill-handling Mopar powered/Team ASE/Ultra Wheel special, Jason Leffler hung on to finish sixth in Sunday's USAC Weld Racing Silver Crown Race at Pikes Peak International Raceway.

"Sixth is pretty good I guess, but we went to Pikes Peak looking to win," commented Leffler. "George Snider brought a great car out here, we just missed the set-up a little bit. The car kept getting looser and looser as the race went on. Our tires had gone through too many heat cycles with all the cautions, so the stagger opened up way too much. I'm not running all the Silver Crown races this season because of my commitment in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series, so when I do get a chance to run with these guys, I want to win."

Leffler started fifth in the 30-car field and quickly picked up three spots, challenging leader Jay Drake just two laps into the 100-lap event. By Lap 15 Leffler garnered the lead from Drake. Unfortunately, the lead was short lived as the Long Beach, CA driver yielded the point one lap later, eventually settling for a sixth-place finish.

"I thought our qualifying time would have held up better than it did," explained Leffler. "We went out early and right at the end of the session a big cloud covered the racetrack and that really helped the guys who qualified near the end. I managed to work my way up to the front right away, but the cautions killed us. The car was pretty loose by the end, so I never got a chance to get back to the leaders. It wasn't a bad day, but everyone on this team is kind of accustomed to winning."

The sixth-place run earned Leffler $2,975 in prize money and kept the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series regular solidly in second-place in the USAC Silver Crown championship standings, just 33 markers behind leader Dave Steele.

Next up for Leffler will be this week's Truck Series race at Memphis Motorsports Park. The 1998 Silver Crown Champ is next scheduled to compete in the Silver Crown ranks Thursday, August 1, at Indianapolis Raceway Park.

The O'Reilly Auto Parts 200 at Memphis Motorsports Park will take the green flag Saturday, June 22 at 1 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time. The seventh race of the 2002 NCTS tour will be telecast live on ESPN and broadcast on MRN radio nationwide.
