Gordon Returns To Defend "James/O'Connor" Title In Saturday's Stoops Freightliner Action At Salem Speedway
Eric Gordon of Indianapolis, Ind., winner of this year's "Little 500" at the Anderson (Ind.) Speedway, heads for this Saturday night's 42nd annual "Joe James/Pat O'Connor Classic" as the defending champion.
Gordon will team in the Arctic Cat/Red Line Oil Gaerte/Beast entries with Stoops Freightliner Sprint Car point leader Dave Darland in the Sprint car portion of Saturday's "doubleheader" which also features the USAC WorldCom National Midget Cars on the 1/2-mile paved oval. A 30-lap Midget Car and 50-lap Sprint car feature conclude the program of events, which starts with practice at 4 pm.
Darland holds a 60-point lead over runner-up Jay Drake in the series standings entering the race, which Darland won in 1999!
Drivers will be aiming at Tracy Hines' 1-lap track qualifying record of 118.569 mph, set last August, when time trials begin at 5:30 pm. Gordon also holds a Salem track record, for 10 laps, set in 1994 at over 110 mph.
Other top challengers in Saturday's Sprint car events are former series champion Brian Tyler, Indianapolis 500 veteran J.J. Yeley, former Western USAC Sprint car champion Bud Kaeding, Jason McCord, Dave Steele and Derek Davidson.
