Clermont, IN (May 16, 1998) - Tony Stewart won tonight's USAC Silver Crown race at Indianapolis Raceway Park. It was the first race on the track since it was fully repaved in April. The new surface provided plenty of side by side action, three wide at times.

At the drop of the green, polesitter Jason Leffler took the point followed closely by Stewart and Russ Gamester. The trio broke away from the pack running nose to tail. Stewart slipped by Leffler on lap seven and held the lead until the finish.

Leffler's car began to fade but Pat Abold joined Stewart and Gamester in the break away trio. The three ran nose to tail until they encountered lapped traffic at half distance. Stewart pulled away easily as he sliced through traffic. As Tony later said "that was when the race became fun".

Dave Steele moved through the field from his 13th starting position making several daring moves along the way. Steele took third place from Russ Gamester with three laps to go. He tried to take second from Abold on the last turn but Abold was up to the challenge.
