Tony Elliott of Kokomo, Ind. and Jay Drake of Val Verde, Calif. shared the spotlight in Valvoline USAC National Sprint Car action last week and are among favorites for victory in this weekend's "4-Crown Nationals," which return to the Eldora Speedway in Rossburg, Ohio after a year's hiatus.
Elliott wheeled the Walker Racing Hoosier Tire/Weld Wheels F-5/Claxton to victory in Wednesday night's 30-lap "Roper Classic" at I-44 Speedway in Lebanon, Mo. He led the final 11 laps after leader Bud Kaeding lost a tire on lap 20. Jesse Hockett, Marc Jessup, Jerry Coons, Jr. and Jon Stanbrough rounded out the "top-five" at the checkered flag in USAC's initial Sprint race on the I-44 dirt. Hockett led the first 10 laps of the race before yielding to Kaeding. The race honored the famous Roper racing family of Fair Grove, Mo.
Drake, who leads the Valvoline National Sprint Car standings, won Saturday night's 30-lapper at the Tulsa Fairgrounds Motorplex presented by Flowmaster. He also finished seventh at Lebanon in his Tony Stewart Racing Mopar/Vital Express Eagle/Mopar. At Tulsa he barely made it to the checkered flag before losing a tire. Coons finished second ahead of Dave Darland, Stanbrough and Dickie Gaines. Josh Ford led the first 27 laps but also fell victim to tire problems and failed to finish.
This weekend's "4-Crown Nationals" at Eldora feature the USAC Weld Racing Silver Crown, Valvoline National Sprint Car and National Midget Car Series, as well as UMP Modifieds. Friday's prelims set up Saturday's semis and features. The feature distances are 25 laps (Midgets), 30 laps (Sprints), 20 laps (Modifieds) and 50 laps (Silver Crown).
