Daryl Campbell of Indianapolis, Ind., and Andy Pierce of Avon, Ind. scored "regional" USAC Midget Car feature victories last week but both rank third in their respective series point standings going into races in Indianapolis, Ind. this week. Point leaders Norm Young and Ron Smoker finished third in each event. Campbell, driving his AFCO Shocks & Springs/Jack's Frozen Pizza VW, passed 4-time series champion Michael Lang on the 40th lap and led the final 11 laps to win Wednesday night's 50-lapper at the 1/5-mile paved Indianapolis Speedrome oval. Lang finished second ahead of series point leader Norm Young, Dean Franklin and Gregg Cory. Lang and Young won the preliminary heats. Pierce wheeled his AMS Motorsports Brayton to victory in Saturday night's 30-lapper at the 16th Street Speedway in Indianapolis, leading the final 13 laps to beat Critter Malone, series point leader Ron Smoker, John Wolfe and Rick Vaughn to the checkered flag. Malone was the fastest qualifier, while heats went to Steve Arnold, Pierce, Smoker and Tony Beaber. Steve Knepper, who won the semi, was one of five drivers to flip during the 16th Street events, escaping injury in flips during the fourth heat and on the 12th lap of the feature. Series champion Michael Lang also flipped on the eighth lap of the feature but escaped injury. The Speedrome Midget Series resumes with a 50-lap feature this Wednesday night, while the 16th Street Series continues with a 30-lapper Saturday night.
