Hunt new regional sprint leader after Carson City win New Mexico/Arizona Sprint Cars on Tucson pavement Saturday.
Tony Hunt of Fair Oaks, Calif. and Rick Ziehl of Las Cruces, N.M. are in the "hot seat" this week as USAC's Western Sprint Car Regional Series continue their 2002 campaigns.
Hunt is the new point leader in the Western Regional Sprint Car standings after his victory in Saturday night's feature race at the Champion Speedway in Carson City, Nev. Tony passed lady driver Shauna Hogg on the 12th lap and led the rest of the way until curfew forced a checkered flag after 28 of the scheduled 30 laps.
Trailing Hunt's Thompson Toyota/Bos Sheet Metal Chevy/Beast to the checkered flag at Carson City were Scott Hansen, Hogg, Bryan Bullard and Doug Lippincott. Hunt was the fastest qualifier. The next Western Regional Sprint Car race is slated June 8 at Madera (Calif.) Speedway.
Rick Ziehl leads the New Mexico/Arizona Sprint car gentry to the 3/8-mile paved Tucson Raceway Park oval in Tucson, Ariz. Saturday night for race two of the brand-new New Mexico/Arizona Regional Sprint Car Series. Ziehl won the opener at Las Cruces, N.M. and leads Mike Boat of Phoenix, Ariz. by four points going into the Tucson event which concludes with a 25-lap feature.
