Yeley takes Stockton 40-lapper. Western Midgets, Ford Focuses at Bakersfield Saturday.

J.J. Yeley of Phoenix, Ariz. extended his lead in the USAC National & Western Midget Car Series standings Sunday afternoon at Stockton (Calif.) 99 Speedway, winning the 40-lap USAC/BCRA co-sanctioned feature event at the 1/4-mile paved oval.

Yeley put his Ford/ASE/Performance Racing Industry Pink Ford/Beast into the lead on lap five and led the rest of the way to beat teammate Bobby East, Jay Drake, Bud Kaeding and A.J. Fike to the checkered flag in the "Havoline Cavalcade of Motorsports" event. Teddy Beach led the first four laps before a cockpit fire eliminated his car.

Yeley emerged from the race with a 15-point lead over East in the National and Western standings. The USAC Western Midget Car Series will compete at the Bakersfield (Calif.) Speedway this Saturday night, along with the California Ford Focus Midget Car Series, led by Josh Lakatos, winner of the series debut March 22 at Perris, Calif. A 20-lap Ford Focus and 30-lap Midget feature are on tap on the 1/3-mile dirt oval.

East was the fastest qualifier for Sunday's Stockton race, the first for USAC's National Series at the track since Hank Butcher's 1969 victory.

The USAC National Midget Car Series will resume April 18 with the "Fred Gerhardt Open Wheel Classic" 100-lapper at the Madera (Calif.) Speedway.
