Tony Stewart of Rushville, Ind. returned to the USAC Sprint car scene Saturday night for the first time in five years and scored a 40-lap victory with a last-lap pass of leader Jason McCord at Altamont Raceway Park in Tracy, Calif. He drove Ted Finkenbinder's Nor-Cal Testing/Aero Jet Services Chevy/Hassle to the win.
Stewart, whose last USAC Sprint win came in 1995 and last Sprint start was in 1997, posted the fastest qualifying time but trailed McCord until they encountered traffic on the 40th lap. The win gives Stewart victories in nine different USAC racing series, an all-time club record. He has now won in Silver Crown, National Sprint, National Midget, Western Sprint, Western Midget, TQ Midget, 16th Street Midget, Speedrome Midget and Western Regional Sprint Car competition.
Saturday night's race afforded points toward both the USAC Western and Western Regional Sprint Car Championships.
McCord finished second in Saturday night's race, ahead of Western series point leader Rick Hendrix, Bobby McMahan and Regional Series point leader Tony Hunt. McMahan led the first 26 laps of the race before yielding to McCord.
Hendrix leads Hunt by 18 points in the Western series, with events scheduled July 12 and 13 at Meridian Speedway near Boise, Idaho. Hunt leads Bryan Bullard, who finished 11th at Tracy, by 29 points in the Regional standings going into an August 3 race at Madera, Calif.
Saturday night's Tracy event saw the return to USAC racing of 3-time Silver Crown Champion Jimmy Sills, who finished sixth in the 40-lap feature.
