J.J. Yeley won the USAC Triple Crown last night in his native state of Arizona. The Phoenix driver became the second driver to win the crown in a single season matching Tony Stewart (1995).
Yeley, the son of "Cactus" Jack Yeley, locked up the USAC Midget title last night at the Tucson Raceway Park with a third place finish in the "Old Pueblo Classic" with one race on the calendar remaining. He had earlier secured the USAC Silver Crown and USAC Sprint titles.
Yeley's record in sprint and midget car racing has opened the doors to one of NASCAR's top teams. The former World of Outlaws champion will join a man whose TSM cars he has driven at Joe Gibbs Racing next year.
"What he (Yeley) can do on dirt tracks is awesome," expressed Stewart. "And all year he's gotten better and better with what he's been able to do on pavement. It's just a matter of time before he gets the hang of stock cars. He's shown his adaptability since he came to USAC in 1997, and his versatility will be an asset in NASCAR."
Two other drivers, Dave Darland and Pancho Carter, have won "Triple Crowns," just not in the same single season.
"This title is one I wanted," Yeley commented. "I am glad I won it here in Arizona with my family and friends at the track. Having the opportunity to drive for Joe Gibbs Racing is something any driver would want.
"It's a good home, with Tony Stewart and Mike Bliss - guys who came up through the USAC ranks before me - already there. It's a great challenge and there's a lot to learn, but I'm ready for it."
