The Cooper Tires USF2000 Championship Powered by Mazda has taken on an entirely new look after this weekend on the Streets of Toronto.
The first race of the weekend was held early on Sunday morning thanks to the rain delay that cancelled track activity on Saturday.
The first race was won by Jake Eidson over Florian Latorre, giving Cape Motorsports with Wayne Taylor Racing a one-two finish with RC Enerson finishing third. Latorre was poised to win, but a late race mistake allowed Eidson to snatch the lead late in the race and he never looked back.
“I got a good draft on Florian going into (Turn) One and was able to put some pressure on him but fortunately I didn't have to make the hard pass. That was probably the most fun I've had in a race like that,” Eidson said of his pass on Latorre.
However, the second race is where the major action took place. Midway through the race, Enerson slowed with a drivetrain failure on lap 13, allowing Latorre and Eidson through to fight for top honors.
Latorre won out in the end over Eidson while Lucas Oil Raceway winner Aaron Telitz finished third. Latorre was adamant that he had no choice but to win in the second race.
"After the mistake this morning, I had to win this one. I am very happy for me and for the team. The race was difficult because of the restarts. Each time I made a gap, I would lose it on the restart so it was a little bit hard but I had a good car which made it easier,” Latorre said.
The points were shaken up quite a bit as Enerson lost his points lead that he had coming into the weekend by falling to third place. Latorre and Eidson overtook Enerson in the points with Latorre leading the standings 200 to 184. Enerson is third on 177 points.
The series next heads to Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course for a triple header weekend. The USF2000 series will race three times as a support series while the rest of the Mazda Road to Indy and the Verizon IndyCar Series are also at the track that same weekend.
