Martin beats Thompson to LOR victory

Anthony Martin left it late to pounce on Cape Motorsports with Wayne Taylor Racing teammate Parker Thompson and then edge away to win at Lucas Oil Raceway.

Polesitter Thompson had led from the start, albeit threatened by Martin, to the extent that from lap 22 they ran alongside each other for several laps of the 0.686-mile oval. But on that occasion, the Canadian held on.

However, with only 15 laps to go, the Australian pounced in traffic, passing his teammate down the inside of Turn 3 and going on to win the only oval race on the schedule of the Cooper Tires USF2000 Championship Powered by Mazda. The victory, won by 1.3sec, was Martin’s second of the season.

He said afterward: “It was a great race, very intense. My car was good in traffic, a little bit better than Parker’s. He got in the wash of the car in front of him in lapped traffic and that’s when I really pulled up to him quickly.

“He was struggling a little bit in the dirty air and I was able to make a move, get past both cars and pull away a little bit. My car had a bit of understeer so the low line really worked for me. That’s unusual for this track because the high line is usually the way to go, but the Cape team gave me an awesome car.”

Thompson finished the Mazda Freedom 75 in second place to maintain his championship lead, while Brazilian Victor Franzoni finished close behind in third place for ArmsUp Motorsports, having edged past third-place qualifier Jordan Lloyd (Pabst Racing) at the start. The top four were covered by just 2.5sec at the end.

Pabst’s Yufeng Luo was fifth, albeit 13sec down on fourth while Team Pelfrey’s Robert Megennis was sixth.

Martin’s victory reduced Thompson’s championship advantage to 25 points, 177-152, as the series heads next to Road America on June 24-26.
