With a bold start, he made his move on pole-sitting teammate Anthony Martin, driving around the outside of Turn 1 to give himself the inside for Turns 2 and 3 and won the drag race up the hill.
Thereafter he was never headed, surviving two restarts – one on the very next lap, as Team Pelfrey’s James Munro stopped with a broken halfshaft after contact with JAY Motorsports’ Cameron Das, and again on lap 14 as three of Thompson’s main pursuers came together.
The incident occurred when Jordan Lloyd of Pabst Racing went to pass JAY’s Luke Gabin who was by now running second. As they slowed each other up, ArmsUp Motorsport’s Victor Franzoni tried to take advantage and the end result was that Gabin survived the onslaught, Lloyd lost a lap with a puncture and Franzoni fell to 12th.
Remarkably, over the remaining five laps, yesterday’s runner-up Franzoni sliced past three drivers to claim ninth. Yet even more remarkable was the progress of Robert Megennis who took the #80 Pelfrey entry from 10th on the grid to a podium, passing polesitter Martin on the penultimate lap.
Nikita Lastochkin brought the third Cape car home in fifth place, while Ayla Aygren was sixth in her John Cummiskey Racing entry.
