VEACH ADDS TWO TOP-FIVE FINSHES AT ROAD ATLANTA INCLUDING CAREER BEST SECOND PLACE FINISH IN USF2000; FINISHES FIFTH IN SEASON POINTS
Andretti Autosport's Veach Earns His Tenth Top-Five Result of 2010 Season
Braselton, Ga. (Oct. 4, 2010) Zach Veach scored his USF2000 career-best finish of 2nd place while competing at Road Atlanta late last month. Overall, he put two top-five finishes in the books while also finishing 5th in the 2010 driver points standings. Veach's team, Andretti Autosport, clinched the team championship while Veach's teammate, Sage Karam, clinched the driver points championship.
"We began the race by conserving our tires and staying right behind the car in front of us," said Veach. "A yellow came out and after we went back to green flag, I was running in second. We had problems with our radio coming loose, which restricted me a bit. That definitely made it harder to hit our mark perfectly. I'm still happy with a top-five finish. We finished fifth in the championship after missing the first couple of races, so I'm very happy. I can't thank the Andretti Autosport crew enough for working so hard this year. I really want to thank my teammate Sage [Karam] and congratulate him for coming out on top for the championship."
The Road Atlanta race weekend began on Sept. 28 with a promoter test day, followed by official practice beginning Sept. 29. Veach qualified for the first race of the week in 3rd and put his first runner-up race finish of the season in the books that evening. Veach was joined on the podium by teammate Karam, therefore giving Andretti Autosport its first 1-2 finish, with Karam sealing the driver points championship for the 2010 USF2000 National Championship with his race win.
"I can't think my team enough; everyone has been working so hard," said Veach. "We've had some of the highest finishes of our season these last few races which shows how far we've come this year. We've got some things to work on but Andretti Autosport has given me a great opportunity and for that I can't thank them enough. I want to thank my teammate and closest friend, Sage Karam, for all the support this year and congratulate him on winning the championship."
The following day, Veach began the final race of his 2010 season rolling from the 3rd position, running as high as 2nd during the mid-point of the race. During the race, Veach's radio ended up in his lap restricting his movement to an extent. He closed the race in the 4th position, adding his 10th top-five finish of the season.
Despite missing out on the season-opener at St. Petersburg and therefore missing out on two rounds of race points, he managed to stay in the top-five driver championship points standings. Although both Mikhail Goikhberg, who finished the season 3rd in points, and Raphael Abbate, who finished the season 4th in points, competed in all 12 events, Veach was just three points outside of fourth and five points outside of third in driver points standings while competing in only 10 of the 12 events.
While this weekend's race ends the 2010 USF2000 National Championship, Veach plans to test heavily during the off-season and hopes to participate in the USF2000 winter tour. He will also announce his plans for the 2011 racing plans in the coming months.
