MCNALLY GETS FIRST LOOK AT BATHURST IN A V8 UTE
Rhys McNally faced up to the daunting Mount Panorama Bathurst circuit today when he completed practice for the V8 Utes racing this weekend.
Having only dreamed of racing at the iconic circuit it all came true today when the rookie headed out for the first of two practice sessions.
"It was scary the first time out; so much different to driving a road car around," Rhys said.
"It gives me a lot of respect for the guys who go flat out from the start; although that was never our plan for today."
Rhys began his plan of getting acquainted with the unforgiving circuit by using the first session to work out his braking marks and get used to hitting blind corners with commitment.
After building his speed Rhys was 18th fastest for the session.
"I was a bit further up than I expected actually; my progress was good, especially since there is only 5 or 6 laps per 20 minute session."
The second practice session was cut short by a red flag which left the bulk of the field with only 2 laps to their name, fortunately for Rhys he was on it straight away and equaled his fastest time from the first session on lap 2.
"It was frustrating to have the session cut short because the more laps I can do here the better.
"I am getting comfortable with the track and are confident that I can go out in qualifying and work towards a good time."
With 2 races on Saturday and one on Sunday Rhys has plenty of time to work his way up to a desired top ten finish.
"I will look at some data tonight but basically I just want to keep chipping away at my times and the results will come after that."
