NZ V8 Ute Champ Breaks the Ice for Gold Coast V8 Ute Win

Ice Break Racing's Chris Pither blitzed the field today in Race 1 of Round 7 of the 2010 Yokohama V8 Ute Racing Series – protected by Armor All on the streets of the Gold Coast, Saturday, 23rd October.

Pither got off the line well from grid position 2 while pole sitter David Sieders missed a gear dropping him back to third behind Hi Tech Motorsport's Grant Johnson who moved into second.

Pither and Johnson gapped the rest of the field while the real battle was on for third between Nulon Oil's David Sieders, Coopers Clear Racing's Jack Elsegood and Shooters Superclub driver Ryal Harris.

Elsegood "Hustled" Sieders the whole race, while Harris first made a great move on Sage Automations Gary Baxter and then on Jesus Racing's Andrew Fisher to move on Elsegood's rear bumper to pressure the current champion.

Harris held fifth until lap 7 when he hit the wall at the back straight chicane causing damage to the car which dropped him to 17th, however not before he claimed the first lap record in a time of 1:27.60, marginally quicker than Jack Elsegood who set the second fastest time. Fisher did well to avoid the incident and claimed fifth for the race.

Veteran touring Car driver Charlie O'Brien made a great inside move on Gary Baxter on lap 2 to claim sixth for the race ahead of Baxter in seventh.

NRW Holdings Rhys McNally claimed eighth for the race and will start on the front row alongside Rockstar Energy drink driver Jeremy Gray after race winner Chris Pither drew number 9 out of the ballot draw to determine the number of cars to be reversed for Race 2.

Gray claimed ninth ahead of Thirsty Camel's Craig Dontas who rounded out the top ten in Race 1.

Workhorse Collision Repairs driver, Ben Kavich also posted one of his best results claiming 11th for the Race.

Samboy Racing's Tim Blanchard, Wilson Securities Charlie Kovacs and Craig Dontas tried to go three wide into turn 1, Kovacs was forced off line losing position and then at turn 4 had contact with James Brock causing them both to DNF.

Tim Blanchard and Wicked Energy Drink driver Brad Patton also had a coming together on lap five whilst battling for 15th position causing them both to miss the chicane. The Samboy Holden came away with damage to the suspension and dropped him to 22nd position.

The V8 Utes will hit the track at 10am tomorrow (Sunday, 24th October) for Race 2, which will be televised as live as at 11am on Network Seven. Race 3 will commence at 12:10pm wrapping up the round.
