THUNDEROUS RESPONSE AT THE LAUNCH OF THE 2006 V8 SUPERCAR SERIES

Thousands of race fans flocked to Brisbane's South Bank Parklands today to witness the V8 Supercars roar into town for the official launch of the 2006 season, which also marks a decade of V8 Supercar racing in Australia.

The season launch coincided with the opening weekend of the Brisbane Motor Show, and saw streets closed off and traffic diverted to make way for a spectacular gathering that showcased the best of the best in V8 Supercar racing.

Queensland Premier Peter Beattie officially launched the season and joined V8 Supercars Australia Chairman Tony Cochrane in cutting a celebratory birthday cake. They were joined by Queensland Minister for Sport Tom Barton and Brisbane Lord Mayor Campbell Newman at the official proceedings.

For the first time this season, V8 Supercar fans had the opportunity to mingle with their heroes, including Russell Ingall, Mark Skaife and Craig Lowndes as well as rising stars such as Rick and Todd Kelly, whilst the drivers proudly displayed their new cars and new liveries.

"Today has provided V8 Supercar fans with a unique opportunity to experience the colour and excitement of the sport whilst getting up-close-and-personal with their heroes," said Tony Cochrane, Chairman, V8 Supercars Australia.

"It was a high octane atmosphere that has filled visitors with the buzz of V8 Supercar racing, laying the foundation for an exciting season start at Clipsal 500 in three weeks time."

The 2006 season of V8 Supercars marks the sport's 10th anniversary and to honour this achievement today's launch also included special guest and inaugural winner of the very first V8 Supercar Championship Series season in 1997 - Glenn Seton.

"V8 Supercars has a lot to be proud of in its ten year history and it's important to celebrate this achievement. As the sport continues to go from strength to strength we have a lot to look forward to in the future," said Mr Cochrane.

The V8 Supercar Championship Series kicks off with the thrilling Clipsal 500 race in Adelaide on March 23, and this can't come soon enough for the teams and fans who have had to endure nearly three months without racing.

"Today's launch marks the start of an exciting season of ahead, and I like the rest of the teams and drivers can't wait to hit the race track," said 2005 V8 Supercar Championship Series winner and Caltex Falcon driver Russell Ingall.
