The stars and the cars of the Century Batteries Australian GT Production Car Championship will again light up the streets of Adelaide on April 4-6 next year with a two hour action-packed feature race at the Clipsal 500.
An outstanding showcase event in 1999, the Clipsal 500 has invited the Australian GT Production cars to join the V8 Supercars on the program, and fill the grid on Saturday night under lights to thrill the fans with a show of sensational racing.
Newly crowned Australian GT Production Car champion and last year’s dominant GTP force on the streets of Adelaide, Jim Richards will again head the field at street circuit event next year. Richards is a staunch advocate of the event and says the race is a credit to the town, which puts on a great show for the visiting teams.
"It’s a fabulous event and a huge buzz racing under lights. The whole state really gets behind the event and last year it was just as good as when the Grand Prix was in town," Richards said.
"The Adelaide people are a great endorsement for the race. When the race is on, the city comes alive and is right behind the event. People come out in droves and make the event their own. I had great success in touring cars here over the years and was delighted to again have a couple of wins last year."
The feature GTP race is scheduled for Saturday night, April 5 and will again be run under lights with flaming exhausts and glowing brake disks adding to the spectacle of the Adelaide circuit. The GTP event will provide a natural intermission on the schedule between the two legs of the V8 Supercar race.
Richards says the opportunity of racing under lights at a street circuit certainly adds to the excitement of the races. The Porsche driver won the night event last year and is again hoping for a trouble free run again at the event.
"I remember last year, lining up for the start and it was just on dusk. I looked up into the stands and they were packed full of spectators. It was outstanding, it was about seven at night and the atmosphere was just terrific," Richards said.
"I’ve always enjoyed racing on the Adelaide circuit and last year was no different. It all added to the spectacle and I can’t wait to get back there next year and defend my title."
General Manager of the Clipsal 500 Andrew Daniels, welcomes the addition of the GTP championship stars to the event schedule and feels it is the perfect accompaniment to the main V8 Supercar race.
"The GT Production Car Championship is one of the most popular categories currently racing in Australia. The performance of the category in the initial race was a highlight of the event, especially under lights, and will again feature in 2000 as a favourite for the fans," Daniels said.
