BOOSTED GRIDS FOR 1999 GT PRODUCTION FIELD
With capacity fields expected during this year's Century Batteries Australian GT Production Car Championship, many competitors are now thrilled with the news that track densities for the category have been increased in 1999.
The increase will allow many many competitors the peace of mind that they may not be culled from the field to due to restricted grid capacity.
"We are delighted with the increased grid numbers as a lot of competitors have expressed concern about travelling all the way to another state -- to risk not getting a start due to grid capacity grid safety restrictions," PROCAR Chief Executive, Mr Bill West said.
"The smallest available grid we now have for the 1999 championship is 36 cars for Hidden Valley in Darwin which shouldn't be a problem.
"The only potential tight grid may be at Oran Park with 38 available spots, but if we have trouble squeezing that many cars onto the grid -- it will be a very nice problem to have.
"While the new densities should limit the problem of oversubscribed grids, we have developed a fair and equitable elimination process that should ensure all competitors get to race.
"The Championship has come a long way since we debuted with nine cars, five years ago. The average grid has been growing steadily every year and this year 50 entrants already have indicated that they will be signing on for the 199 Championship season, confirmation of PROCAR's believe thate our move to the V8 Supercar program will boost entry numbers."
Grid densities for the 1999 Championship rounds will be: Eastern Creek (50), Phillip Island (40), Hidden Valley (36), Sandown (47), Queensland Raceway (TBA), Calder Park (40), Winton (40), and Oran Park (38).
Grid capacity for the Adelaide Street race are yet to be determined while Indy and Bathurst remain at 40 and 55 cars respectively.
