Lowndes fights back to win final Bahrain race
TeamVodafone's Craig Lowndes has fought back from Friday's spectacular on track accident to win the final V8 Supercar race at the Bahrain International Circuit yesterday and move to second in the championship.
There was no such joy for team mate Jamie Whincup who didn't score a single point this weekend after his run of bad luck continued with drive through penalties in both races yesterday.
In Race 2, Whincup left the track in an incident but then tried to reverse back on straight into the path of an oncoming Max Wilson and was subsequently penalised for a dangerous re-entry to the track while in Race 3, he was penalised for hitting the cones.
After finishing fifth in Race 2, Craig Lowndes drove a sensational third race to take the win and finish sixth for the round.
"The boys did an amazing job to get the car back on track after Fridays incident," said Lowndes
"It was a tough weekend but thankfully we were able to fight back and get some good points.
"I am now 20-points behind Garth Tander with two rounds to go and as we have seen over the past two rounds anything can happen," he added.
Slipping to third in the championship, Jamie Whincup now trails championship leader Garth Tander by 29 points and is nine points behind Lowndes.
"We are really disappointed," said Whincup. "When things don't go your way they really don't go your way."
"In Race 2 I didn't think anyone else would be coming, I had very limited vision and unfortunately Max (Wilson) was there.
"Apparently I hit cones in Race 3 but I don't think I did, it was a disastrous weekend I am glad it is over," Whincup admitted.
TeamVodafone will now head back to their Brisbane headquarters to prepare for the penultimate round of the V8 Supercar Championship Series which will be held at Tasmania's Symmons Plains Raceway November 16-18.
