Bowe/Johnson look to reunite famous names

Two of Australia’s most iconic motor racing names, Johnson and Bowe, could be competing together again in the near future.

Bowe is currently looking to put together a sponsorship package to allow Steve Johnson, son of iconic Ford legend Dick Johnson, to race Bowe’s Ford Mustang at the upcoming Touring Car Masters round in Darwin.

Johnson Junior, an accomplished driver in his own right, already has experience in Bowe’s Mustang, having subbed in for Bowe at the Tasmania round back in March.

But should a deal be put together to get Johnson in the car for Darwin, the two iconic names would be team-mates again for the first time since 1998, with Bowe set to stick with the Holden Torana for the foreseeable future.

The Bowe and Johnson names have a long history together in Australian motorsport; Bowe spent 11 years as a Dick Johnson Racing driver in the Australian Touring Car Championship between 1988 and 1998, with Johnson Senior and Bowe winning the Bathurst 1000 together twice during that time.

Today, Bowe took to Facebook in a bid to help raise some additional funds alongside his current sponsors to expand to two cars for Darwin, and bring the Johnson and Bowe names back together.

“We’ve had so much support and positive comments from you guys about putting Stevie J in Mustang Sally for Darwin.” he wrote.

“Now the mad rush is on, so I've been firing all over the place trying to raise a budget to run Steve Johnson in Sally, and then I had a thought over the weekend: maybe you guys would want to assist with helping fund Stevie in Sally. Would you guys support it if we could get it going?

“Imagine him and I on track together, Bowe and Johnson in the #17 and #18. Who likes that idea?”

Motorsport.com understands that a crowd-funding programme is expected to be officially launched tomorrow.
