Shepparton driver on track for V8 future

Garry Jacobson has made a significant step toward achieving his goal of racing V8 Supercars by winning the Victorian Formula Ford Championship at the weekend.

The 18 year old Goulburn Valley Grammar School student emerged victorious from the four round series after two fifth place finishes at Phillip Island, driving for the Confederation of Australian Motor Sport's prestigious Rising Stars team.

Jacobson's championship victory was achieved with a mix of consistency and raw speed, typified by his thrilling last lap victory at Sandown in May.

"After winning the second round I knew I had a really good chance of winning the championship," said Jacobson.

"I was always going out and trying hard to win, but in the back of my head I had the old saying 'to finish first, first you must finish', and I think that helped me make smart decisions throughout the season.

"It's been a very enjoyable year in the Victorian championship, with a lot of fast young drivers coming from interstate to compete.

"I can't thank CAMS, the Australian Motor Sport Foundation and the great team at Minda Motorsport enough for the opportunity to race in their Formula Ford development team.

"They put their faith in me at the start of the year and it feels great to be able to repay them with a championship."

Jacobson will be back behind the wheel next Monday at Benalla's Winton Motor Raceway, testing his Penrite Spectrum ahead of the next round of the Australian Formula Ford Championship at the Gold Coast 600 (October 22-24).

It will be Jacobson's fourth national series appearance this year, ahead of a full season campaign in 2011.

"I'm really looking forward to rejoining the national series on the Gold Coast, especially after our strong results at the circuit last year in the Aussie Racing Car Series," he said.

"We are aiming to do the full national series with the support of the AMSF next year, where we hope to start out amongst the top ten runners, and progress toward the front as I gain more experience." A previous winner of Australian Karting Magazine's 'Driver of the Year' award, Jacobson is the first V8 Supercar aspirant to have been selected for the Rising Stars program.

"It's an honour to be the first driver with a clear aim of racing in V8 Supercars to be awarded a place in the Rising Stars program," he said.

"Having said that, we would not ignore any overseas opportunities, should they arise in the future.

"I have to thank my parents (Peter and Jodie) for their incredible support," he added.

"They have made plenty of sacrifices so that I can go racing, and it's nice to be able to race and win as a family."
