Shane van Gisbergen was the last driver on the track and he did not disappoint, edging teammate Jamie Whincup for pole by a mere 0.0660, putting up a lap of 1:10.8384.

"It's tough around here. You take a little too much and you end up 10th. Cars really good though, so I'm happy," said Whincup.

Starting third will be the most experienced Triple Eight driver -- Craig Lowndes. James Courtney, who narrowly avoided disaster in the fast chicane, will take up the outside of the second row. Chaz Mostert rounded out the top five.

Two drivers that weren't as lucky were Prodrive's Mark Winterbottom and Cam Waters. Winterbottom ran purple in the first sector before clouting the fence out of the fast chicane, settling for eighth. Waters did the same on his lap, albeit a bit gentler, but still only good enough for seventh.

"Just got it wrong. Will tune it up again, just didn't do a good job then, trying too hard," admitted Winterbottom."

Two drivers -- Lee Holdsworth and Michael Caruso -- were handed kerb strikes and had their times disallowed.

Bathurst 1000 winner David Reynolds clocked in sixth after a brake lock-up in Turn 4 spoiled his run. "Really disappointed with that otherwise, would have been a pretty good lap," he said afterwards.
