Times quickly dropped down into the 10s at the beginning of the 20-minute qualifying session with Shane van Gisbergen setting the pace at a 1:10.3701.
In the final five minutes, Todd Kelly was able to displace Cam Waters inside the top ten after a big moment for the Prodrive driver. But Waters was able to respond with an impressive lap that launched him up to P2 at a 1:10.5084. Kelly later fell outside the top ten once more.
David Reynolds and Chaz Mostert both took shots at SVG's fast time, but neither were able to topple the Triple Eight driver. Reynolds clocked in second with a 1:10.4707 and Mostert third with a 1:10.4783.
Waters, Mark Winterbottom, Jamie Whincup, Michael Caruso, Craig Lowndes, James Courtney, and Lee Holdsworth will join them in the top ten shootout.
Rick Kelly was the first driver on the outside in 11th. Both DJR Team Penske drivers failed to advance with Scott McLaughlin 13th and Scott Pye 17th.
Drama unfolded in rapid succession as time ran out when Dale Wood popped the wall at Turn 11, sustaining right front damage. Tim Slade, 12th, then covered the street circuit in smoke as he suffered an engine failure, culminating with a fire underneath the car as oil coated the exhaust.
