HSV Racing pays tribute to Tander title win

HSV Racing has paid tribute to former driver Garth Tander’s 2007 Supercars title win with a retro livery for James Courtney’s Commodore for the Sandown 500.

The Walkinshaw squad has opted to celebrate the second of two consecutive championship triumphs in the mid-2000s, Rick Kelly winning the 2006 title in HSV Dealer Team colours before Tander did likewise a year later.

The well-known black and orange livery has now been adopted onto the car that regular driver Courtney will share with co-driver Jack Perkins at this weekend’s opening endurance race at Sandown.

“For me, being involved in the team as a race engineer at the time, it’s great to pay tribute to such a successful period in the team’s history,” said HSV Racing’s General Manager of Motorsport Mathew Nilsson.

“To win the driver and team championship two years in a row was a fantastic achievement, so it’s nice to reflect on that. It’s a period we all are very proud of, and it certainly yielded some fantastic memories.

“As for the car, the orange and black is a match made in heaven with [current sponsor] Boost Mobile, so it’s great to have such a good-looking car that reflects a major part of the team’s history, while working so well with our current partners.

“We are all really excited to have this car on show at the Sandown 500.”

Ironically, the tribute to Tander’s title success comes almost a year to the day since the driver split with the Clayton outfit. His nine-year stint as a Holden Racing Team driver was announced to be coming to an end shortly after Tander won last year’s Sandown 500 alongside Warren Luff.
